Will Not Cry in Public

A media art exhibition
By Olan Netrangsi, Pathompon Tesprateep, and Sathit Sattarasart
April 17-May 17, 2008
at 7th Floor, Main Library, Chulalongkorn University

Yield is a group of young artists from Bangkok, consisting of Olan Netrangsi, Pathompon Tesprateep, and Sathit Sattarasart. They all graduated from Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Fine Arts and Applied Art. Born in the 1970s and shared their interest in independent film, alternative music and culture, yield actively involved with a group of young independent film and video makers based in Bangkok.

This exhibition focuses on public and private issues, control / yield, and fiction / reality. This young generation artists expressed their individual concern on different level and dimension of social structure and media propaganda.

L1050404

Olan Netrangsi’s works consisted of interactive video and 2 channel screens TV addressing the power of media propaganda in daily basis on how it effect our lives and how much can we resist them? It raised the questions to us whether we have to be the victim of media, in order to blend in with the society. Is it too power and able to brainwash us to automatically following their marketing strategy?

L1050416

Working as music maker, artist and video maker, Pathompon Tesprateep’s meditated works depict his selective point of view to the society. In the exhibition, he present a series of downloaded cover version of Billy Joel’s song, ‘Just the Way you are’ performed by different people around the world from youtube, the biggest video community among virtual society. He integrates his video, “there is no center of the universe”, which is inspired by Caspar David Friedrich, a German landscape artist, portraying the abandonment of all faiths.

L1050412

Interested in fiction and reality, the new video work of Sathit Sattarasart, “This construct can serve no purpose anymore“, It was inspired by a quote of HAL 9000, a super computer in Stanley Kubrick’s film, “2001: A Space Odyssey. Instead of spoon-feeding audiences with direct visual images, he twists the way of watching moving pictures by activates the audiences’ imagination based on character’s conversation. Along with the video, his photograph and text-based painting correspond to various dimensions of spaces in the movie, reality and imagination.

“Tomyam Pladib” is an art exhibition of Thai and Japanese artists exploring the coexistence of the traditional the contemporary. It aims to show the complexity of Thai and Japanese contemporary art and culture through the multi-disciplinary works of Thai and Japanese artists.

This project will present multi-layered perspectives on this synergy and modern art, as seen and interpreted by Japanese and Thai artists, drawing on their short- and long-term cross-cultural experiences. The exhibition will feature Japanese artists who have visited Bangkok to create and exhibit their work. Some have fallen in love with the city, and continue to live and work here. It will also include Thai artists who have lived and worked in Japan.

The title “Tomyam Pladib” combines a famous dish from each country’s cuisine. Tomyam is a spicy Thai soup and Pladib (meaning “raw fish”) is the Thai term for sashimi. This new term reflects an understanding between Thais and Japanese who are familiar with both languages. It also symbolizes the special relationship between the Thai and Japanese communities. The title unites two of Asia’s great gastronomic traditions.

It was inspired and coined by Bangkok-based Japanese writer, Ryota Suzuki, who has long served as a bridge between his own culture and Thai culture. In his Thai language column for A Day monthly magazine, Suzuki shares Japanese responses to Thai culture, and reflections on everyday life in Bangkok. He also writes bi-weekly articles for Yomiuri Shimbun about Thai culture and Thai attitudes towards the Japanese.

Through the works presented in the exhibition, the artists explore the co-existence of the traditional and the contemporary in their respective cultures, using a variety of artistic strategies including video art, animation, installation, textiles and fashion as well as literature. Most of the works stem from memory, cultural collaboration and everyday life experience.

“Tomyam Pladib” is dedicated to an artistic dialogue and the strengthening of the cultural relationship with Japan, in response to the celebration of 120 years of diplomatic relations between Japan and Thailand, and the 30th anniversary of the Japanese Volunteers Association relationship with the Jim Thompson Thai House Museum. Special events, curator’s and artists’ talks, seminars and a workshop will be conducted throughout the exhibition period.

"Our Lady of the Low Countries"

Our_ladys_einvitation

By Michael Shaowanasai
February 9 – March 30, 2008
Opening Reception: February 9, 2008, 6:30 pm

Brilliant and bizarre performance artist Michael Shaowanasai, better known in Thailand as super heroine Iron Pussy, reinterprets the symbols of feminine divinity to transform himself into a revered public monument. Inspired by a penetrating dialogue with a handsome Dutch theologian, he bestows his new divine persona with the title ‘Our Lady of the Low Countries.’
“Thailand, especially Bangkok, is a lowland country too,” he says. “When we look up to our celebrated icons, we only see 180 degrees, or just one side, of them. This is why Our Lady is photographed on a pedestal in the middle of a busy traffic circle. People drive around Her and get a 360 degree view.”

Whether you find Michael’s work delicious or offensive, Our Lady’s high-wattage glamour and sanctity is sure to electrify.

Politics in Art – Between Sharing and Showing

Politics in Art – Between Sharing and Showing
7 Feb 2008
Venue: Goethe-Institut Auditorium, Bangkok

The symposium takes place in the framework of two exhibitions: ARTSPACE GERMANY, and UNDERLYING from The Mekong Art and Culture Project.

Part 1 :
Time: 10am - 12:30pm

A considerable number of Thai artists studied arts abroad. They studied foreign standards and international standards in depth, and had to find their own standpoint as foreigners. But finally they made it. They majored, earned local fame outside their own country. Finally they returned home with a degree and recognition from studying arts abroad. But what seemed to be a privilege often turns out the beginning of an estrangement from one´s home and home standards and cultural language.
We asked Sutthirat Supaparinya, Wasinburee Supanichvoraparch to join us in a reflection about the question: was it worth going abroad?
Moderator: Jakapan Vilaseenikul.

Part 2
Time: 1:30 - 4pm

The symposium takes place in the framework of two exhibitions: ARTSPACE GERMANY, and UNDERLYING from the Mekong Art Project.

Dr. Ursula Zeller (ifa – Institut of Foreign Relations, Germany) and
Dr. Apinan Poshyananda (Centre of Contemporary Art at the Ministry of Culture, Thailand ) will be talking about state support for the arts. In particular they will consider the role of the arts in the outreach of a state outside its own boundaries and the degree of public support for the interior growth of the arts.
Moderator: Dr. Sayan Deangklom.

Opening reception and book launch on December 6, from 6 p.m. onward.
At Gallery VER
www.verver.info

Nim Kruasaeng, a self-taught female artist, lives and works in Bangkok and Pattaya. She paints mostly on canvas and watercolour paper. Her subject matter is what comes to her immediate senses; impression or memory, which she transfers it through visual expression, using honest, deliberate strokes.

The show will include her first-ever exhibition of sculpture. The three sculptures to be presented there are a three-dimensional development of the approach she takes in painting.

The opening reception will also celebrate the launch of a related artist's book. The 150-page, hardcover volume is a collaborative work that pairs images of Nim's paintings together with a series of related photographs by artist Rirkrit Tiravanija.

Place: BACC's front patio, Patumwan Junction

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is organising a soft launch of the new Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) to announce to the public and the art community the progress and the program of the BACC.

BACC is the project initiated by BMA since 1996 to build a well-equipped art and cultural facility in the heart of Bangkok, Thailand. For over ten years, there have been stages of obstructions and attempts to change the direction of the facility’s original function due to the political will of the BMA administration during 2000-2004. Throughout the ten years, the artists, designers, academics and cultural workers in Thailand worked as a loose network to put forth a series of advocacy campaigns to promote public awareness and participation, as well as, to pressure the BMA administrations to commit to the plan to create the cultural infrastructure and to establish a foundation to manage it.

The present administration, led by Governor Apirak Kosayothin has taken the initiative to the point of the building construction and establishing a foundation. On Friday, November 30th 2007, the Governor will announce to the public the management plan of the BACC.

"Bhikku Sandan Ka": Artists' Assembly in supporting Silpakorn University and the artist Anupong Chanthorn

You are pleased to join the assembly to support Silpakorn University and Anupong Chanthorn on their position, not to take out the painting “Bhikku Sandan Ka" from the National Exibition. The gathering will take place on Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 at 10AM onwards, by Silp Bhirasri's sculpture.

Background:
The Awarding winning and young artist, Anupong Chanthorn, was protested by a group of monks against his painting that just won the 53rd National Exhibition of Art this year. The work is titled “Bhikku Sandan Ka" (monks with crow-like natures) which the artist said he “wanted to remind the public about monks who indulge in vices.”

National Legislative Assembly (NLA) urged the Culture Ministry to step in and have the artist in question take responsibility. The Fine Arts Department has also scheduled a meeting to discuss the issue. Anupong Chanthorn refused to pull his award-winning painting out of the 53rd National Exhibition of Art. The painting is being featured at an exhibition at Silpakorn University's Sanamchan Palace campus in Nakhon Pathom province until October 30.
(See “Artist sticks to his principles” in The Nation : Thursday, September 27, 2007)

Religious issues, especially, Buddhism seems to be used as the cause and regarded as very sensitive when artists try to depict the fact that there are some practitioners who do not respect the essence of the religious beliefs.

Breasts & Clouds by Pinaree

Einvitation_card

July 19 – August 19, 2007 at 100 Tonson Gallery
Opening Reception of the Exhibition "Breasts and Clouds" on Thursday 19 July 2007 at 7 pm.

Don't miss the latest painting exhibition by Pinaree Sanpitak, the female contemporary Thai artist, who is known for her delicate, sensible, and passionate works. For many years, she has been exploring the concept of 'breast stupas' (breast-shaped sculpture) in multidemensional approaches, last year she went back to the brushes and canvases. Her new series of paintings are yet neat, skillful, and fun.
www.100tonsongallery.com

"I don't exactly remember how or why I started drawing breasts and clouds. It was about a year ago. I wanted to spend time by myself in the studio painting, just me and the canvas. Later I was told there is a word in Pali and Sanskrit, payotara which means beholder of milk and beholder of water. Breasts and Clouds! Amazing! "

at Kathmandu Photo Gallery

Open daily except Monday, from 11 AM to 7 PM

[**The opening reception on Sat 16 June, at 6.30pm]

……………………………………………….

"The photographic series of Nirvana / Paradise : Reality / Illusion , 2007, explores the interchange between Buddhist and Christian perceptions through my performance of myself as a still-life object on the roofs of houses.

As a child, I used to climb and sit on the roof of my home in the countryside. I liked to look around from my self to my family, home, street, car, garden, canal, ricefield, hill, clouds, birds and butterflies. I would breathe slowly as in meditation and wished the air would set me free from this world.

I try to observe the world in a Buddhist way. The world of materialism and emptiness, happiness and sadness, simplicity and complication, peace and disorder. The world that would reveal to me both its reality and illusion. Let me see the paradise and the hell that exist in my mind."

La Fete: "Some Proposals for the next future"

L1010448

7-30 June 2007
at PSG (Faculty of Painting, Sculpture, and Graphic Arts) Gallery, Silpakorn University.

Curator: Jean-Marc Prévost

"Some Proposals for the next future" questions the political and conceptual stakes concerning some of the artistic practices in which architecture was considered as one of the ways in which the work of art could escape from its status of consumer good. Two Thai artists are invited to exchange ideas on these proposals: Wit Pinkanchanapong is interested in new information technology and social and urban space, and Arin Rungiang, questions the strategies of conceptual art and the spiritual aspects of Thai culture.

At a time when the stream of information and objects is speeded up, the importance and place of the work of art will be at the core of this exhibition.
